Please bear with me, I’m trialling a Blogger comment system (ironing out the bugs as we go… oh, how exciting/daunting to go live with this!) that enables threaded comments.
I found the tutorial here if you’re game to give it a go. Please dear GOD don’t ask me for any help! It’s taken me much of the morning to tweak this baby. CSS and Javascript is tricky enough as it is when it’s your own code, let alone when you’re dabbling with someone else’s hack for a script to run within a Blogger template. Yikes! But it’s as good as any I’ve found and I’ll bet the author (“Shams”) will help if you give him a shout out in his comments on that post. He seems to really know his stuff.
You should notice that if you want to comment on a post, it will still give you a pop-up window. But if you have clicked to a dedicated post URL (ie. you are viewing just the one post on a page and its comments underneath), you will be able to reply to individual comments. I’ve just noticed, though, that if you reply to someone’s comment, once it’s published there’s no link back to the post/blog. Er… bit of an oversight, that. Shall look at fixing.
A bit convoluted, but until Blogger joins the world party, it could be a good alternative. Save for moving my blog across to a completely new platform – I still have not seen enough benefits to outweigh the hassles and time involved in doing that, as I’m not a start-out blog… me n’ Blogger, we’ve got a lot of history y’know! – I think this might just work. My housework is “exemplary” enough as it is, without me spending even more unnecessary time faffing about with my blog look. Small tweaks are all I have time for these days. I don’t want to nurse a complete blog export. Perish the thought!
Use it, bear with it for a while, let me know what you think. Feedback welcome!
Colours…. I’m working on those too ![]()

Just had a look back at another post with comments and I think I'm going to like it here! LOL
I really like the idea of being able to reply to a comment and have often wished I could do that on my own blog.
You're so clever!!!
@cjtato A-haaa, a live commenter… I mean, guinea pig! ;-P
It might be a bit weird at first, but it could really work! I forgot to add credit for the code to my post. Will do now. Cheers.
@Being Me
And you will notice, if you're viewing these comments in the pop-up window, that they just look like Blogger's normal comments one after the other. BUT if you're viewing this inline (comments embedded on the page because you're viewing the post on its own) then my two replies should be staggered. W00T!
Hmmm… but I've just noticed there is no way to get back to the post/blog if you do reply to an existing comment. Eeek! Right. Off to investigate some more *sigh*
Ummmmm. I am fascinated…
I am constant quandry about my commenting system…
love that you are being brave and trying new things on your blog. Go girl! N x
@Diminishing Lucy
Hmmmmmmm well I didn't say it was seamless did I?! I may yet trash it. I fear change, myself! But let's have some fun first, eh?
@Naomi
Can't hurt to try first. Couple of things are perturbing me! We'll see if my obsessive nature can handle it (or fix them)….
As long as I can leave and read comments without hair-tearing-out frustration, it's all fine.
Not sure about the boxes that the comments appear in but being able to reply to individual comments is great.
Oh! Now I want to do this…but I'm scared of stuffing it up! lol
It all sounds far too complicated for me; I have enough trouble with the basic blogger! By the way, it says here that there are 11 comments already, but they are not visible.
My last comment didn't work.
@Tenon_Saw but this one did.
@Tenon_Saw
Boo! I think I'm going to scrap this. I'm already a bit antsy about it and it's been, what? A day?
@Alienne
Well that's a bit troubling… I can see them all. Thanks for telling me.
Is it techie? I'm not good with techie. Not even semi techie.
Giving it a try, let me know how it goes!
You must have done something because I can see all the comments and replies now
@Alienne No I didn't do anything, promise! That's bizarre. I'll keep an eye on that, if it's flaky consider this gone
But then again, Blogger itself does very odd things with its number of comments compared to actual. Think of our friend Steve and the posts he's made about same…
@River
Hair tearing frustration is something I try to avoid at all costs. So if it is deemed that at any stage, it goes! My promise to you.
@Steve
Ok, let's see if this works for you – try and reply to this if I could be so bold as to request…
What about the boxes perplexes you? The fact that they are boxes? The look of it? The colours? (I don't like the colours… I have to get in to the code to fix them)
@mybabyjohn
It's pretty techie. Yes. Don't try this at home, kids!
@Thea
I think it's pretty safe to say that Blogger is aware they have fallen far behind in the world of commenting/ease of replying/threaded comments. So I'm sure there will be improvements to the way blogspot bloggers can set up their comments on their own blogs. I'd wait for that. I will probably undo what i have done here…. A scary prospect! I don't like messing with my blog code (when I haven't written it myself, I don't exactly know what I'm looking at or where I'll find it and that bothers me).
Oooh staggered and colour coded. Fancy pants.
I can't see any of the other comments. Is that how it's supposed to be? I don't think so.
